Case Studies: Public Safety
Indianapolis Airport
Fire Station No. 1
Indianapolis Airport Authority required a multi-use, state-of-the-art fire station at the new Indianapolis International Airport, designed to provide immediate response to both aircraft and facility needs, and to also serve as a training facility and main headquarters for the airport.
Joe Mrak, acting as Principal in Charge on the project, proposed the construction of a 4-bay immediate response station that would be capable of addressing both aircraft and facility disasters and would provide a fire truck refueling area. Joe Mrak’s team then oversaw the construction of the project, ensuring that everything stayed within budget and met all required programmatic needs unique to fire stations. Such needs included a foam pumper, water, ambulance, SCBA fill tanks, oxygen tanks, HAZMAT containment areas, dry chemical storage, foam storage, and telecom duct banks all incorporated within the rest of the airport campus. The project also created a training area for 60 personnel with direct feed, satellite, and video conferencing capabilities.
In all, the project resulted in a highly state-of-the-art fire and training facility for the Indianapolis International Airport, which housed all the facility’s equipment while also providing for necessary appropriate emergency response for both aircraft and the airport’s needs.
